What OD professionals work on

Organizational Development examines structures, behaviour, culture and capability at a system level. Work may involve organisation diagnosis, team effectiveness, role design, change facilitation, leadership interventions and research. The professional should diagnose before recommending a familiar workshop or framework.

Roles and career routes

Relevant titles can include OD Analyst, OD Consultant, Organisation Effectiveness Specialist, Change and OD Partner, Organisation Design Manager and Head of OD. People often enter from L&D, HR business partnering, consulting, behavioural science or change work. Compare the L&D page when deciding between individual capability and organisation-level work.

Skills and preparation

Systems thinking, facilitation, qualitative research, survey interpretation and careful stakeholder management are useful. Candidates should be able to explain ambiguity, competing interests and how they would test whether an intervention helped. Senior OD work normally requires substantial organisational experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is OD the same as change management?

They can overlap, but change management may focus on adoption of a specific change while OD can address wider organisational effectiveness. Employers define both differently.

Is Organizational Development part of HR?

Often, but it may also sit in transformation, strategy, learning or consulting teams.

Can an L&D professional move into OD?

Yes, especially after building organisation diagnosis, research, facilitation and change experience beyond programme delivery.
