How this calculation works
The calculator compares one employment start date with an end date or today. It reports the calendar interval in years, remaining months and days, plus completed months and total elapsed days.
Formula used
Experience = calendar difference between start and end dates; completed total months = years × 12 + remaining months.
Practical example
From 1 January 2022 to 15 March 2024, the calendar interval is 2 years, 2 months and 14 days.
Total experience and relevant experience
Total work experience usually describes time spent in employment across roles. Relevant experience is the part directly connected to a particular vacancy, skill or function. A recruiter may therefore record a lower relevant-experience figure than your overall career length. Use the calculator for an exact date interval, then describe relevant experience separately and honestly in your application.
Using the result on a resume
For a current role, select Use present date. On a resume, list each employer with clear start and end months and keep the underlying dates consistent with employment records. A short career gap does not become work experience; it should remain separate from the employment periods around it.
- Calculate each non-overlapping employment period separately.
- Do not add overlapping dates twice when roles ran at the same time.
- Follow the employer or application form’s convention if it counts both joining and exit dates.
Current limitations
This version calculates one continuous period at a time. It does not combine multiple employers, remove career gaps automatically, or identify overlapping jobs. For several roles, calculate each period and combine only the non-overlapping completed time.

- Confirm whether your organisation counts both joining and exit dates.
- Overlapping employment periods should not simply be added.
- Career gaps are excluded only when you calculate employment periods separately.
